Collaborators

We have much to learn from the rich experience of our colleagues in the field of youth empowerment and community development. We believe it is important to draw from the knowledge and experience of like-minded groups, cooperating around a shared vision rather than competing for resources and attention from the communities we hope to serve.  Dialogue with other institutions and agencies in the field contributes to our ability to read reality and to become increasingly effective in our efforts.

About Wordswell

Wordswell Association for Community Learning is a non-profit organization established in Toronto in 2007 by a group of young adults concerned about their younger peers who were transitioning to a crucial stage of life at a time when society is experiencing rapid and significant change.  We work to assist youth to adopt a pattern of life coherent in all its dimensions so that they advance academically, intellectually, and morally, and, in turn, contribute constructively to address the needs of their communities.  Our efforts are guided by four main principles:

  • Youth represent a vast reservoir of capacity and when well nurtured they live fruitful and rewarding lives in which service to their community and society takes center stage.

  • Youth have an innate desire to learn, an inherent thirst for knowledge, and to contribute to their families and communities. They develop when engaged in activity that challenges them and provides them meaningful opportunities to serve.

  • The development of one’s individual capacities and service to the community are inseparable facets of life. Central to our initiatives is the idea of a twofold purpose: to attend to our growth and development and to contribute to the wellbeing and progress of our communities.

  • All people, regardless of nation of origin, educational level, or class have a part to play in building a united and prosperous world. Our programs offer an approach to learning that seeks to empower participants to act as protagonists of change in their families and community.
